Using NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope, astronomers detected Beta Pictoris d, a giant planet that had been hidden inside the dusty disk of one of the sky’s most studied young star systems, 63 light-years away.
Beta Pictoris is one of the most scrutinised young star systems in all of astronomy, a nearby stellar nursery that scientists have used for decades as a laboratory for how planets are born. So it came as a delightful surprise when NASA’s James Webb Space Telescope revealed that the system had been hiding another planet in plain sight. Reported by ScienceDaily on July 23, 2026, the new world, named Beta Pictoris d, had been concealed within the bright, dusty disk that surrounds the star, 63 light-years from Earth.
What makes the find especially clever is the method used to make it. Rather than trying to photograph the planet directly, which the glaring dust disk made nearly impossible, the team used spectroscopy with Webb’s Near-Infrared Spectrograph, teasing out the faint molecular fingerprints of the planet’s own atmosphere. They identified telltale signatures of carbon monoxide, water vapour and methane, allowing them to pinpoint a planet that conventional searches had missed for years. Beta Pictoris d is a giant, at least twice the mass of Jupiter, orbiting roughly 30 astronomical units from its star, making it the outermost of the three planets now known in the system.

The research was led by Aidan Gibbs of UC San Diego, working with Jean-Baptiste Ruffio, Ben Sutlieff of the University of Edinburgh and Markus Bonse of the European Southern Observatory, and was published in The Astrophysical Journal Letters. “This discovery adds another piece to an already fascinating planetary system,” Gibbs said. “Beta Pictoris has long served as a laboratory for understanding how planetary systems form and evolve, and now we have another planet helping us tell that story.”
Beyond the thrill of a new world, the achievement showcases a powerful new technique. By detecting planets through their chemical signatures even inside blinding disks of dust, astronomers can now probe environments that once hid their secrets completely. Many young solar systems are shrouded in exactly this kind of debris, so the approach could reveal a host of planets that have so far escaped notice, deepening our picture of how systems like our own come together.
