NASA’s Psyche mission has pulled off a flawless piece of cosmic choreography, using the planet Mars as a free boost on its way to one of the strangest destinations in the solar system. The magnetometer measured the planet’s magnetic bow shock, and the spectrometer successfully detected neutrons streaming from Mars. “The mission’s imager, magnetometer, and gamma-ray and neutron spectrometer teams worked overtime to make full use of this planetary encounter,” said principal investigator Lindy Elkins-Tanton of UC Berkeley, with Bob Mase serving as project manager at NASA’s Jet Propulsion Laboratory.

When Psyche finally reaches its namesake asteroid, it will study a world thought to be unusually rich in metal, possibly the exposed core of an early planetary building block, offering a glimpse into the hidden interiors of rocky worlds like Earth. For now, the successful Mars flyby is a quiet triumph of navigation and teamwork, and a reminder of how gracefully human ingenuity can ride the gravity of other planets across the vast distances of space.
