Women’s flag football surges toward NCAA championship status ahead of the LA 2028 Olympics

Women’s flag football is one of the fastest-growing sports in American colleges, and it is closing in on a landmark. More than 120 schools are fielding women’s flag football teams this academic year under the NCAA’s “emerging sports” umbrella, and the NCAA is scheduled to vote in January, across Divisions I, II and III, on whether to make it an official championship sport. A national title game could be held as early as spring 2028.

That timing is no coincidence. Flag football will make its Olympic debut at the Los Angeles 2028 Games, and the college game is racing to build depth before then. The sport has already gained championship status at the NAIA level, with a title game scheduled for May, while programs jockey for early advantage — Cal Poly has recruited Team USA players Ashlea Klam and Maci Joncich, and Nebraska hired Liz Sowers, who won five NAIA national championships at Ottawa University in Kansas.

For the athletes, the moment is about respect as much as opportunity. “For so long, flag football was seen as just the female version of football or the easier version of football,” Joncich said. “Now, it’s getting the respect it deserves.” Pro Football Hall of Famer Steve Young put it more bluntly: “This game is made for girls… there will be an explosive effect to it.”

The grassroots numbers back that up. High school participation reached 68,800 girls in 2024, and the NFL has thrown its weight behind the sport through sponsorships, with recent NFL Flag Championships drawing more than 3,500 competitors from 13 countries. From playgrounds to potential Olympic podiums, a sport once dismissed as a lighter version of the game is carving out a stage entirely its own.
